Monday, April 17, 2023 02:15 PM

***This announcement is for research projects that would begin in 2025***

Earthwatch Institute is an international nonprofit organization that connects people with scientists worldwide to conduct environmental research and empower them with the knowledge they need to conserve the planet. Since 1971, Earthwatch has supported rigorous scientific research that promotes the advancement of scientific knowledge and action that addresses global change and helps sustain biodiversity.

Earthwatch is very pleased, after a three-year COVID-induced hiatus from developing new projects, to seek pre-proposals from scientists for field-based research that actively engage citizen scientists (recruited by Earthwatch) in projects that address key conservation and sustainability issues in the following areas:

  • Biodiversity Conservation
  • Marine Conservation
  • Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)

In all of these areas, we are prioritizing research that will take measurable actions in addressing threats to terrestrial and marine biodiversity, ecosystem integrity, functionality and resiliency. We are also prioritizing engaging Indigenous leaders and scientists in braiding Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) with Western scientific process and our model of participatory science to effectively mitigate and adapt to the threats associated with our rapidly changing climate.

Please visit  to access detailed RFPs and a link to our portal for submitting pre-proposals for review. Earthwatch encourages members of groups historically underrepresented in the STEM disciplines, scientists local to the nation where the research takes place, and early-career scientists to apply.

The deadline for pre-proposal submissions is Friday, June 9, 2023, 11:59 PM EDT.
