Wrangell Mountains Center

  • The Wrangell Mountains Center is a nonprofit organization based in remote McCarthy, Alaska, surrounded by our nation's largest National Park, Wrangell-St. Elias, and just minutes from the toe of the Kennicott Glacier. Serving students, scientists, writers, artists, travelers, and local citizens, we exist to create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to explore, express themselves, and be transformed through direct experience with this extraordinary place. Our mission is to connect people with wildlands, and we do that in creative and diverse ways. In some aspects we operate like a Field Station, especially through our college accredited Wrangell Mountain Field Studies summer program, in partnership with the University of Maine, and when we host field programs for various groups from the University of Alaska system. In addition we offer a wide array of community focused art and science programs aimed at non academic participants. We also collaborate in partnership with local Tribal organizations and host programming for Alaska Native Youth. Our campus is rustic and historic, and we have a communal kitchen and multiple large gathering spaces for events.
