The UC Davis Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve is set in the steep inland canyons, hillsides and ridge-tops of northern California’s Inner Coast Range. It forms part of the Devil’s Gate Wildlands recreation area and borders the southernmost tip of the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. The reserve has a mix of habitats with high species diversity and the University of California maintains the site as an ecological preserve for teaching and research. Offering spectacular views of the Inner Coast Range and opportunities for relative solitude also makes the reserve an immensely popular destination for tens of thousands of hikers each year. UC researchers, staff and partners apply innovative ‘minimum tool’ approaches to mitigating adverse ecological impacts from public user groups.
