Río Sapo Biological Station

It is a citizen initiative to protect and restore the area that makes up the upper basin of the Sapo River, in the north of the department of Morazán, to preserve the environmental benefits, ecosystem, and species found there. The “Salvemos Río Sapo” Initiative is led by three civil society organizations: Fundación Naturaleza El Salvador, Asociación Territorios Vivos El Salvador, and BioSistemas. This initiative proposes to create the first Fund for Land Conservation and Restoration in El Salvador, whose purpose is to purchase land and create alliances with community landowners to conserve biodiversity. It currently has approximately 10 hectares of forest where the Río Sapo Biological Station was created as a research and conservation site in El Salvador. The FS Río Sapo promotes research and education projects and supports young researchers in their early careers.
