The Long Lake Field Station (LLFS) is located 45 miles east of Moorhead, MN or 3 miles west of Detroit Lakes, MN. It sits on the boundary of the Hardwood Hills and Red River Prairie ecological subsections. The field station consists of about 1800 feet of shoreline and 18 acres of woodland, 12 acres of wetlands, 7 acres of oldfield/green space, 0.2 acres of restored shoreline, 65 acres of restored prairie/pollinator habitat, 13 acres of other habitat for a grand total of 120 acres.
In 2019 a classroom/lab building was constructed to facilitate use of the site by faculty for teaching, research, and outreach.
Improvements at the Long Lake Field Station are focused on keeping the land and facilities sustainable. In 2009, the LLFS building was constructed with many sustainable features. Projects have been completed to preserve the land and provide a home for wildlife to thrive including a shoreline restoration project and the establishment of a high-density pollinator habitat.
