Bocas del Toro Biological Station

The Institute for Tropical Ecology and Conservation (ITEC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1996 and a nonprofit NGO in Panamá (Resuelto No.: 221-PJ-108). ITEC has its home office is in Gainesville, Florida, and operates the Bocas del Toro Biological Station on Isla Colon, Bocas del Toro, Panamá. The biological station overlooks Almirante Bay and Volcán Barú on the mainland.  The ITEC station is unique in having coral reef and lowland tropical rainforest immediately accessible from the field station.  This juxtaposition of the two most biologically diverse ecosystems, along with Panama’s rich cultural diversity, provides tremendous opportunities for education, research and conservation.

ITEC’s Mission is to provide tropical field educational and research experience to undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students, to provide facilities for long-term biological research in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems, operate programs for the conservation of terrestrial and marine resources and to serve the local community by establishing local education programs on environmental awareness and resource conservation. Our Vision is to create through experiential learning, individuals who are not only better prepared to meet the challenges of their academic careers but who also have increased awareness of their relationship with the environment. Our hope is that these assets will translate into individuals capable of making informed and meaningful decisions that will positively affect the future of our planet.

ITEC has five areas of operation:

  1. provide immersive field courses in tropical ecology, anthropology and geology
  2. host visiting academic groups
  3. provide a venue for tropical research
  4. conduct environmental conservation programs in marine and terrestrial ecosystems,
  5. present environmental education programs at local schools.

The Bocas del Toro Biological Station receives visiting groups and students from countries worldwide.
