UC Merced Vernal Pools Field Center

  • The Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve (MVPGR) protects 6,500 acres of rare vernal pool and grassland habitat adjacent to UC Merced. Part of the UC Natural Reserve System since 2013, the reserve is home to hundreds of native and endemic species and is considered one of California’s most intact and biologically diverse wetland landscapes. The site is permanently protected through conservation easements. The reserve is a day-use site open by reservation through RAMS to researchers, educators, students, and approved visitors. Guided tours, classes, and special events are available by request. Staff support and utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) can be reserved for a fee. Drop-in visits are not permitted, except on publicly announced open days (see the Reserve's website or social media for updates). Coming Fall 2025, the new Field Education and Research Center (FERC) will be a fully off-grid, sustainable facility. FERC will serve as a hub for hands-on science, collaborative research, environmental education, and community engagement—connecting people with nature and inspiring the next generation of scientists, educators, and environmental stewards.
