Executive Director of Cloudbridge Nature Reserve

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:

The Cloud Forest Conservation Alliance (CFCA) is a US based 501c3, recognized as a Costa Rican corporation, operating Cloudbridge Nature Reserve in Costa Rica. Cloudbridge is a private nature reserve stretching from 1550m to 2600m (5085-8530 ft) in the cloud forest of the Talamanca mountains. For more than two decades, CFCA has built a reputation for excellence in international scientific internships. Much has changed during that time, and CFCA recognizes the need for new ideas, approaches, and solutions to effectively impact today’s environmental and conservation challenges within the cloud forest.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

The CFCA  Board of Directors is seeking a passionate and purpose-driven Executive Director to lead the Cloudbridge Nature Reserve and Research Field Station into its next phase of growth and transformation. We seek an accomplished leader demonstrating a keen understanding of the organization’s mission to conserve the cloud forest, through science-based research and education utilizing a business-led approach.

This individual must demonstrate a proven ability in strategic leadership, fundraising, management, collaborative ventures, and constituency building. An understanding of business principles applied to a nonprofit organization, particularly a background in scaling sustainable growth, promoting continuous improvement of program quality, revenue enhancement and diversification is required.  A creative thinker with an entrepreneurial spirit is highly desired. The ideal candidate will have a background that includes high-level strategic leadership and management combined with an understanding of relationship-driven philanthropy and partnership. 

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •   Strategic Leadership and Vision (20%): Propel the CFCA’s strategic direction, interweaving the established vision and plan with our core values. Drive initiatives with a deep focus on research, education, and conservation, setting a course for growth and impact.
  •   Operational Excellence (25%): Oversee all CFCA/Reserve operations to ensure all operational facets are efficient, effective, and in harmony with our strategic vision, driving excellence across every aspect of the Reserve’s activities.
  •   Community Engagement and Partnerships (10%): Act as CFCA’s ambassador, forging and deepening alliances with  community members and organizations. Drive collaborative initiatives that resonate with our strategic vision and amplify our conservation mission.
  •   Financial Oversight and Sustainability (15%): Safeguard the CFCA’s financial wellbeing with prudent budgeting, resource management, and fiscal oversight. 
  •   Conservation Advocacy and Education (10%): Lead and inspire advocacy and educational endeavors that embody the CFCA’s dedication to conservation. Engage audiences in meaningful ways to foster a culture of stewardship for our environment.
  •   Team Leadership and Organizational Culture (10%): Structure and nurture our team, promoting an environment of professional growth, efficiency, and engagement. Champion an organizational culture that values every team member, from staff to volunteers.
  •   Fundraising and Resource Development (10%): Elevate our fundraising strategies and donor relations to fuel the CFCA’s strategic objectives. Cultivate generosity and support through authentic and enduring connections with donors and stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS SUMMARY:

  •   Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  •   Leadership Experience: Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in organizations, with at least 3 years in a management role with a strong track record in staff development and establishing partnerships.
  •   Strategic Planning and Execution: Demonstrated ability in developing and implementing strategic and operational plans.
  •   Communication Skills: Excellent public speaking and writing skills, with the ability to compellingly articulate CFCA’s mission and vision. 
  •   Financial Acumen: Experience in financial management, ensuring the financial sustainability of an organization.
  •   DEAI Commitment: Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
  •   Fundraising Expertise: Proven success in fundraising, grant writing, and cultivating lasting relationships with donors and partners.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Language Skills: Functional fluency in Spanish and English.
  •   Environmental Expertise: Knowledge of climate and other environmental challenges relevant to the region.
  •   Scientific Background: A professional or academic background in science.
  •   Operational Experience: Experience with the development and implementation of research and environmental educational programs.

LOCATION: San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica.  The role requires an on-site presence to lead the team and engage the community.

The target compensation package for this position is $18,000 – $24,000 USD, including benefits.
