The CSU Mountain Campus is nestled in a beautiful, secluded mountain valley at an elevation of 9,000 ft. (2,743 m) lies Colorado State University’s 1,600-acre Mountain Campus. Established in 1914, the Mountain Campus serves as a destination campus for research and education, local, national, and international conferences. Programs and activities at the Mountain Campus shape and inspire current and future leaders’ lives through learning and immersion experiences in the Rocky Mountains, and facilitate research addressing critical issues in ecology, environmental science, and natural resources.
The Mountain Campus operates from mid-May to mid-October each year, and is located 53 miles west of Fort Collins, approximately a 2-hour drive, the last 16 miles of which are on a gravel road. The campus is adjacent to the northern border of Rocky Mountain National Park and shares boundaries with Roosevelt National Forest. Abundant opportunities exist for hiking and backpacking, mountain climbing, mountain biking, and fishing.

There is limited cell phone and internet service and no TV reception. Basic first aid is provided by the campus nurse, but definitive medical care (hospital/ER) is located in Fort Collins. Room and board is included for all staff during operations. The Mountain Campus is managed by the Department of Housing & Dining Services, and includes 8 career staff and 30 student and nonstudent seasonal staff and interns.

Housing & Dining Services
Housing & Dining Services (HDS) is the largest department on campus with 450 full-time staff and 1,700 hourly and student staff, and nearly 8,300 students live on campus. HDS is responsible for the management, finance, administration, and program development of all University housing facilities, including residence halls, university apartments, and Mountain Campus.

Position Summary
The Associate Director for CSU Mountain Campus (MTC) provides supervision, leadership, financial management, administrative oversight, evaluation, crisis, emergency and risk management for an active seasonal CSU Mountain Campus operation. This includes the conference center and a comprehensive academic and research facility in a remote mountain setting. The Associate Director carries out and contributes to the strategic growth of a well-respected collegiate program. The management and leadership for the daily operations is a critical component of this position. Collaborative relationships with internal and external partners are important to the success of the Mountain Campus. Academic, educational, research, and sustainable programs are provided in collaboration with Warner College of Natural Resources (WCNR) faculty, and other CSU faculty for summer field courses as well as the environmental and outdoor education program Eco Week in partnership with the Poudre School District and City of Fort Collins. The Associate Director oversees a staff of 2 full-time professionals and 30 seasonal staff during the MTC season.

The Associate Director must be willing to work outside of the standard university business hours on a regular basis during the summer conference and Mountain Campus seasons. The individual carries out their responsibilities under the supervision of the Director of Conference and Event Services and Mountain Campus.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
  • Five years professional experience working in a supervisory capacity

  • Experience working as a challenge ropes course facilitator; mountain recreation (hiking, backpacking, etc.) and Leave No Trace (LNT) skills, Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or Wilderness First Aid certification
  • Well organized, able to work effectively under pressure with multiple and changing deadlines and priorities, and adept at problem-solving and decision-making
  • Competency and leadership ability in interpersonal communication, working with diverse teams, able to collaborate successfully with campus and community stakeholders.

  • Daily oversight and leadership for the total campus infrastructure and program
  • Develops, along with the Director for Conference and Event Services and Mountain Campus, the long-term Mountain Campus priorities; leads the Mountain Campus to the fruition of such goals
  • Manages the daily operations for the student, staff and guest experience at the Mountain Campus responding to inquiries, crisis situations and guest experiences
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of sound principles of leadership and management aiding in the achievement of campus and departmental goals
  • Responsible for the daily academic efforts with the Warner College Natural Resources Academics Programs including NR220 and F230
  • Collaborates with appropriate CSU faculty and staff on various research initiatives hosted at the Mountain Campus
  • Responsible for the daily oversight of the environmental science program “Eco-Week”
  • Responsible for the daily oversight of the Ropes Course, including appropriate training and safety inspections
  • Collaborates with CSU Safety & Risk Management to implement all safety and emergency plans
  • Serves as a liaison to CSU Facilities Management for daily operations
  • Serves as a liaison to the CSU Police Department
  • Serves as representative for the Mountain Campus interest with capital improvements, deferred maintenance and facilities projects

  • Manages the occupancy meeting both daily and long-term goals for the revenue generation of the Mountain Campus
  • Works closely with the Mountain Campus Dining Manager to provide dining services operation which includes three meals a day seven days a week ensuring menus and meal plans as well as food safety operation and inspections
  • Works closely with the Manager for HDS Facilities to ensure clean, well-maintained and operational facilities
  • Responsible for training and operation of the ropes course including daily and annual safety inspection
  • Responsible for public relations, such as daily oversight of relationships with local landowners, hikers and visitors
  • Development and implementation of recycling, sustainable alternatives and composting programs.
  • Contributes to the responsibility for the daily operation and management of the wastewater treatment plant
  • Serves in an on-call rotation of staff managing crises, emergencies and responding to student and guest needs 24 hours a day during the season
  • Create assessment and evaluation timeline for programming and evaluations for the Mountain Campus
