INFORMATION ON SIGNING UP!

OBFS originally had a large book with an entry for each field station. In about 1993, we copied the OBFS directory entries from the book and simply moved them to the website. Then, in about 1998, we realized we wanted to move to a database that included all stations and could be searched on the web. In order to do this, we had to develop a standard form for each station to use. This form is now available here. We are asking all stations who want to be in the searchable site database to make sure they have filled out the new directory form. The information we are requesting will help people find your station, determine if the station meets their needs, or the station might shelter futher information that would be spur a contact. Thanks for your patience with the form.

Simple As - Copy and Paste

If you only have access or knowledge of e-mail, you can do this. Just click on the Model OBFS Directory Form . Highlight it all, copy it, and paste it into some word processor program, for example Microsoft Word. Keep the data entry fields the same. Fill in the particulars for your station. Then highlight the entire revised form, and copy it into the body of an email to me, Mark Stromberg (stromber@socrates.berkeley.edu).

° When you are done with the file in your word processor, do a "Save As" and save it as HTML file. Rename it with the convention of; state abbreviation_Your_Station_Name.html and for example of such names; "CA_Hastings_Reserve.html" would be fine. Then open you e-mail software, send me a message, and ATTACH the file (eg. CA_Hastings_Reserve.html).

More Sophisticated Option- Download and fill in HTML file

If you have the software to write an HTML file, (Front Page, PageMill, Dreamweaver, etc.) then copy and past the file ModlForm.html into a new document in such an HTML editor. Fill in/Change your information. Then e-mail me and attach the modified .html file. Netscape seems to consistently fail in attaching .html files. Use dedicated E-mail software (like Eudora) to do the attachment. Or, include all the HTML markup in your new Directory Form and put it in the mesage box in Netscape and fire it off to me.

If you want, change the file names as described above.

Information on OBFS e-Mail

The OBFS now has two email lists:

(1) obfs@lternet.edu -- closed, and moderated, meaning that email will
be scanned for appropriate content, viruses, and so on. The intent is to
eliminate unwanted advertisements and unnecessary email traffic. This
email list is also for all students, scientists, and staff that are
registered in the OBFS personnel database. Content of widespread
interest (i.e., all individuals working at field stations) can be sent
to this list.

(2) obfs-members@lternet.edu -- closed, but not moderated, meaning that
only OBFS members (224, currently) can directly send email to this list.
Content should be restricted to information of significant interest to
all or most members. Please note: both field station directors and other
registered members are extremely busy and do not appreciate receiving
un-solicited or irrelevant email traffic. So, please take time to
consider your over-worked colleagues before pressing the "SEND"
button
.

The first list (obfs@lternet.edu) currently consists of everyone in the
OBFS database (251 people as of this email). You now have the option of
taking yourself off of the list. To do this, just go to the search
page:

http://obfs.lternet.edu/search.htm

And follow the instructions under "To Update Your Information" which are
a) enter your last name
b) click "Update Person Above"
c) click "UPDATE" under User
d) enter your password or return if you don't have one and
e) click "Submit"
f) choose "NO, Don't put me on the email list" in the pulldown
box under
"Would you like to receive emails sent to All OBFS members?"
g) click on "Update"

The second list (obfs-members@lternet.edu) is maintained at the LTER
Network Office and cannot be changed through the web. This list
represents the list of email maintained in Peter Connors°s spreadsheet
of members in good standing. Duplicate emails at one site were deleted
so you may want to check the list and see if the best email was kept or
if the email for your field station is on the list.
